Nine years had passed since the Yankees received a championship ring. Since 2001, New York had not seen such an emotive and landmark home opener.

This Tuesday, the 'Lords of the Rings', Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra, with six and ten victories, respectively, in their careers, participated in the rings presentation. This ceremony ended with fanatics and ex teammates in a standing ovation to Angels player Hideki Matsui, World Series MVP in 2009. Then, Bernie Williams, a four time Fall Classic winner, threw the first pitch.

After all the applause, the Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim started the first game of the season at Yankee Stadium. Nick Johnson and Derek Jeter began to build the 7-5 victory with solo homeruns in the first and third innings, against the 'righty' Ervin Santana (5.2, 7 SO, 5 BB, 8 H, 5 R y 5 ER).

Jeter’s impact appeared again with an RBI single in the fourth, and Curtis Granderson scored. The captain wasn’t the only Yankees player who produced two runs. Alex Rodriguez batted in a 2-run RBI single with the bases loaded in the sixth.

The eighth inning confirmed Jorge Posada’s performance when he connected an RBI double. He went 3-4. Then, Granderson, who also wanted to be on the productive list, hit the ball to close the 'pinstripes run factory'.

However, the key to winning the game wasn’t only on hitting. The starting pitching continues showing astounding presentations. Left hander Andy Pettitte´s (6.0, 6 SO, 3 BB, 5 H, 0 R y 0 ER) six strong innings were enough, and Chan Ho Park threw very well to get six outs.

The only Angels’ damage came with homeruns from Kendry Morales and Bobby Abreu, who got a grand slam, David Robertson struggled with Abreu’s shot, so Joe Giradi brought in Mariano Rivera to close the game.

Pasaron nueve años para volver a ver a los Yankees recibir un anillo de campeón. Desde el 2001 no se presenciaba un home opener para los de Nueva York tan emotivo.

Este martes en Yankee Stadium se contó con Whitey Ford y Yogi Berra, 'señores de los anillos' con seis y 10, respectivamente, acompañando la entrega. La presentación de los campeones finalizó con una ovación a Hideki Matsui, el MVP de la pasada Serie Mundial, quien con el uniforme de los Angelinos igual fue ovacionado por la afición y sus ex compañeros al momento de recibir su reconocimiento. Luego, Bernie Williams, ganador en cuatro ocasiones del 'Clásico de otoño', hizo el lanzamiento inicial.

Después de los merecidos aplausos, los Yankees y los Angelinos de Los Ángeles de Anaheim comenzaron el primer partido del 2010 en Yankee Stadium. Seis entradas que bastaron porque Chan Ho Park no le temió a sacar seis outs y recibir únicamente un daño 'angelino', que llegó por la vía del jonrón: Kendry Morales.
